(PatriotNewsDaily.com) – Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats will issue subpoenas against Leonard Leo, a conservative activist, and Harlan Crow, a Republican megadonor, over their connection and dealings with Justices sitting in the Supreme Court.
The Senate Democrats are pushing to have legislative changes to the Supreme Court and they are hoping that the subpoenas will allow them to force the Supreme Court to adopt a political ethics code.
However, the GOP lawmakers have long opposed the efforts by the Democrats to pressure the judiciary and Supreme Court, especially following the confirmation of three conservative justices during the Trump administration. Currently, the majority in the Supreme Court has been flipped, with six conservative and three liberal justices sitting on the bench.
A report by the Associated Press has noted that support for enforcing an ethics code has only been expressed by the three liberal justices.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has also stressed that the Constitution has maintained that the judicial system should act independently and that the actions of the Democrats would violate the U.S. Constitution. He has further argued that Congress does not have the right to dictate what the Supreme Court does and that these issues should be addressed by the Chief Justice. He added that Congress should remain out of these conversations as they did not have any jurisdiction over the court.
He further stated that he was confident in Chief Justice John Roberts’ ability to look out for the Supreme Court and protect it.
Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) has also argued that while they were all concerned about the decline in public confidence in the courts, this was not something that Congress has the right to address.
