(PatriotNewsDaily.com) – Former President Trump is trying to delay the trial that will examine his possible mishandling of classified documents, by claiming that his position as a Republican candidate and several other factors justify postponing the trial indefinitely.
If Trump’s strategy succeeds, he may be able to push his trial towards a date that is more beneficial to him. If he wins his 2024 Presidential campaign then it is also possible that the Justice Department under his administration would completely withdraw the charges filed against him. There is also the possibility that a different Republican president would also pardon him.
Many criminal defendants push for their trials to be delayed. Former federal prosecutor Jeff Robbins argued that what Trump and his team have done is unique and that the reason for the delay requested is “unprecedented.”
Trump is currently seeking a delay of a year and a half. His justification is that, because the trial is scheduled prior to the presidential election, he would be unable to receive a fair trial and his lawyers would require a long time to properly prepare his defense. Finally, he claimed that he is looking to postpone the trial because he simply does not have time to deal with it.
Robbins argued that all three of these arguments would not stand in most courtrooms. The Department of Justice has also rejected all of the arguments introduced by former President Donald Trump and his attorneys.
