There were plenty of moments during President Trump’s State of the Union address that demonstrated the difference between Republicans and Democrats, but none perhaps so clear as when the president vowed that America would never follow Venezuela down the socialist path to tyranny and ruin. At a moment when it would have been theoretically easy for 99% of the Democrats on the left side of the House floor to stand up and applaud, they merely sat on their hands and looked dour for the cameras while the Republicans cheered and chanted, “USA!”
If that doesn’t tell you everything you need to know about where this party is headed, we don’t know what would.
“America was founded on liberty and independence and not government coercion, domination and control,” Trump said in one of the night’s most rousing moments. “We are born free and we will stay free. Tonight, we renew our resolve that America will never be a Socialist country.”
The cameras naturally focused on Sen. Bernie Sanders at the moment of Trump’s proclamation, and his visage was a sight to behold. Red-faced and expressionless, Sanders – the self-described socialist who has inspired millions of millennials to adopt his Chomsky-esque view of America – sat still while the other side of the auditorium went wild with applause. And while Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer did manage to put his creaky hands together for some restrained applause, the young bimbo from New York – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – didn’t move a muscle. Small wonder, since she’s one of the loudest voices in the new American Socialist movement.
Eager to avoid the real issue – that they really do want to make the United States a country more in line with the values and norms of a place like Venezuela – Democrats went on the attack after the speech.
In remarks to reporters, Ocasio-Cortex said, “I thought it was great. I think he’s scared. He sees that everything is closing in on him and he knows that he’s losing the battle of public opinion.”
Um, okay. We’ll grant you that Trump is “scared” that this great nation could fall into the hands of would-be socialist tyrants like you and Crazy Bernie, but that’s hardly a defense, now is it?
Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington played the same card.
“I think he’s worried about the good ideas like Medicare for all and taxes on the wealthiest and a green new deal and he wants to paint it as socialism,” Jayapal told reporters. “And I think he’s worried and he wants to paint it as socialism, but these are actually policies that every industrialized country in the world almost has instituted and built their societies on.”
Yes, but this is always the line Democrats go to when defending their most extreme, far-left ideas. The fact of the matter is that America is unlike every other “industrialized” country, and that is exactly what has made us the greatest empire the world has ever known. We are the great blinding spotlight of freedom, and from that light has come the most extraordinary advancements in the history of human civilization. Democrats want to trade all that and turn us into just another European adjunct.
If not something worse.
