( – On Tuesday, former New Jersey governor and 2024 Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie warned that if former President Donald Trump became the party’s nominee in 2024 it would be an “enormous gift” to the Democrats.

During an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Christie argued that the first presidential primary debate on Wednesday had been the starting mark of the presidential race and that people were going to start placing more of their focus on it in the fall. He argued that Republicans were going to understand that a nomination for Donald Trump would be a gift for the Democrats, who want him to win the Republican nomination.

Christie added that the Democrats were doing everything they were currently doing because they knew that they could defeat Trump; they had already done it before. Christie also proceeded to comment on a Republican primary poll from Georgia, where Trump was recently indicted on 13 counts but still holds a 42-point lead against all other Republican presidential candidates.

However, the former governor argued that the polls were going to change once fall came and people started to pay more attention to politics. He added that so far all the polls are “hypothetical” and added that the legal troubles Trump is currently facing could lead to people changing their minds about supporting him, especially as Trump will spend more time in court than on the campaign trail. He added that a candidate cannot be out campaigning when he is also facing federal cases and criminal trials.
