According to an Axios report, House Democrats have decided to address concerns over President Joe Biden’s cognitive ability by deflecting attention to the Supreme Court.
Democrats have been seething following the Supreme Court’s ruling on Presidential immunity, effectively delaying a federal case against former President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C.
Democrats are now framing November’s election as an opportunity for voters to decide on the future of the U.S. democracy.
Speaking to Axios, Democratic Rep. Jared Huffman (California) suggested the immunity decision meant the “election is no longer about choosing a President,” and that instead, it was about whether the country keeps or ends its democracy.
Democratic Rep. Bill Pascrell (New Jersey) described Monday’s ruling as a “travesty” and possibly the “most dangerous judicial opinion from our Supreme Court in generations.”
Monday’s ruling on Presidential immunity resulted in Democrats reiterating their calls for court reforms, including term limits, ethics rules, and expanding the bench.
Their most recent narrative has come at a convenient time, given the chatter about Biden withdrawing from the Presidential race amid questions about his cognitive health.
The media has fueled conversation about Biden’s cognitive ability by dissecting the President’s mumbling, stumbling, and, at times, confusing responses, which the White House blamed on a cold and Biden blamed on travel.
Reshaping the narrative around U.S. democracy would allow Democrats to allay fears about whether Biden is capable of completing a second term by shifting focus on the Supreme Court’s decision and touting Biden as the only way to save the U.S. from a rogue SCOTUS.
