Democrats Abandon Biden Over Top Issue

West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin and Texas Representative Henry Cuellar signed onto a letter last week which calls for the White House to further extend Title 42, a Trump-era health policy that aimed to reduce the numbers of migrants entering the country in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

With the pandemic having winded down, many immigrant advocates have been claiming that the Biden administration needed to let the policy expire, while there were others who maintain that the policy is necessary for handling asylum seekers entering through the U.S.-Mexico border.

The White House has faced a lot of criticism over its handling of the U.S. border situation, and recently it lost a federal lawsuit that forced them to end Title 42 on December 21.

The latest remarks by Manchin and Cuellar come only a few days after President Joe Biden asked for another $3 billion from Congress to deal with the expected surge in migrants following the end of the measure.

Manchin and Cuellar on Sunday appeared on CBS’ Face the Nation where they defended Title 42, saying that the measure needed to be extended until there was immigration reform in the country. The Senator also called on Biden to use any power he has to have the measure extended.
