Thursday probably wasn’t the first time a House representative read a children’s book on Capitol Hill, but it may have been the first time that book’s subject was a transgender child. Rep. Jackie Speier, a California Democrat, read “I Am Jazz” to her colleagues last week – the charming tale of a young boy who finds out that he’s really a girl.
“All across the country today, teachers, librarians, and parents will be reading the book ‘I Am Jazz,’ a children’s book about transgender youth, co-written by Jazz Jennings, pictured here, and Jessica Herthel,” Speier said.
Yes, it was good ol’ Read I Am Jazz Day, an effort put on by several groups, including the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. Apparently the initiative began when a “hate group” forced a Wisconsin school to cancel plans to read the book in class.
“The local community rallied holding a reading at the library that drew more than 600 attendees in support of the student,” Speier said. “This is a movement, with readings across the country to increase understanding and to show young people that they are welcomed and loved. I’m proud to join these readers today from the House floor.”
For those who don’t have a copy of “I Am Jazz” at home, here’s a summary, courtesy of Amazon:
From the time she was two years old, Jazz knew that she had a girl’s brain in a boy’s body, she loved pink and dressing up as a mermaid and didn’t feel like herself in boys’ clothing. This confused her family, until they took her to a doctor who said that Jazz was transgender and that she was born that way.
Fascinating. The hilarious part is that they make it sound as though they ran a blood test on Jazz and it came back positive for transgender. The sad part is that this diagnosis seems to have been made on the basis of…a color preference? At the age of two?
It’s all very bizarre, but you knew that already.
The problem with all of this really has very little to do with transgender individuals. It’s such a tiny sliver of the American population…it just…it doesn’t matter. Politically, it doesn’t matter. But it has turned into this huge ordeal because Democrats want to put the final nails in everything that holds the Republic together. Common sense, decency, tradition, freedom, faith – they are tearing it all away to make room for their Big Progressive Ideas. If they can convince the world that men can be women and women can be men, then the sky’s the limit.
Aren’t you dying to see what’s next?
