House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who still thinks there was something significant and historic about the fact that she presided over a party-line impeachment process in the House, told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour that while the impeachment of Donald Trump was and is wholly legitimate, the president’s acquittal in the Senate was not.
“What about the fact that the president seems liberated,” Amanpour said. “This is about Democratic politics, so I’m not asking you to criticize here, but he was acquitted, his poll ratings are high—”
“He was not,” Pelosi interjected. “You can’t have an acquittal unless you have a trial, and you can’t have a trial unless you have witnesses and documents. So he can say he’s acquitted, and the headlines can say ‘acquitted,’ but he’s impeached forever, branded with that, and not vindicated. And even the senators were saying, ‘yes, it wasn’t right,’ but they didn’t have the courage to act upon that.”
Uh-huh. So if the impeachment trial didn’t go your way, the result is illegitimate? Indeed, it doesn’t even count? Pelosi is coming really close to calling it “fake news,” is she not?
Sadly, Pelosi is not the only Democrat out there peddling this nonsense. Last week, Sen. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii was on CNN with Wolf Blitzer, trying out the same bizarre talking points.
“The Senate has clearly spoken now,” said Blitzer at the time. “The president was acquitted.”
“No, Wolf,” said Hirono. “He wasn’t acquitted. It was a rigged trial. You don’t get acquitted when you don’t even get to call witnesses or relevant witnesses or have the documents because the president stonewalled all efforts on the part of the House to get the information they requested. So there you go. It was a rigged trial. He can run around saying he was acquitted, but you don’t get acquitted in a rigged trial.”
That’s rich coming from the orchestrators of a rigged impeachment.
There was no rigged trial. The House had their opportunity to make a case, and they blew it. They blew it because, A, there IS no case, and B, because they were so rushed to impeach Trump that they didn’t bother actually building one. They wanted the Senate to do it for them. And now they’re throwing a tantrum because not only was Trump acquitted, he actually rose to new heights in the public opinion polls. This was one of the worst backfires in American political history, and people like Pelosi and Hirono are desperate to save face.
Well, it’s not gonna happen. You guys made this bed, and it’s going to be nice and comfy on November 3. Might as well lie down.
