Defund the Police Movement Has Americans Rushing to the Gun Store

With coronavirus fears at their height, toilet paper running empty at the grocery stores, and total uncertainty about where the pandemic was headed, gun sales surged in March even as many states and municipalities tried to shut down the supply chain. While concerns over the impending collapse of society have largely passed – as far as the pandemic is concerned, anyway – gun sales are beginning to skyrocket once again.

This time, however, it’s not a post-virus wasteland that Americans are worried about. This time, they’re worried about racial unrest, unrestrained rioting, and calls for an end to policing.

From CNN Business:

Firearms dealers across the country have reported a recent spike in sales, citing the unrest following police brutality protests in support of George Floyd and calls to defund the police as catalysts, according to gun industry analyst Rob Southwick, founder of the market research firm Southwick Associates Inc.

“Anything that can cause people to feel unsafe in relation to possible physical crime to self, others and property can drive firearm sales,” Southwick told CNN Business.

Background checks for firearms purchases reached an all-time high in March and maintained record highs for April and May, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a firearms trade association that monitors gun sale-related background checks to track industry trends.

Semi-automatic handguns outpaced shotguns by a two-to-one margin as the weapons of choice among first-time gun buyers, according to gun merchants surveyed by NSSF.

It is not, of course, especially worrying that leftist agitators are in the streets calling for police to be defunded. That’s not the problem. The problem is that half of our elected officials – and you damn well know which half we’re talking about – are actually taking these calls seriously. Serious writers are being published in spaces like The New York Times, where they make what sound like well-reasoned arguments for a post-police American society. THIS is what has put rightful fear into law-abiding citizens: the idea that Democrats might actually go along with these radical, disastrous demands.

And there’s reason for that fear when you have Minneapolis Democrats suggesting that it is a matter of “white privilege” to wonder who you’ll call when someone is breaking into your home in the middle of the night. There is reason for that fear when Seattle Democrats stand aside and call a forceful occupation of downtown a “summer of love.” There is reason for that fear when a police officer uses justified deadly force…and winds up charged with murder.

One black scholar or another told Huffington Post last month that if we get rid of the police, Americans will just have to find other ways to resolve their problems.

Judging by the spike in gun sales, Americans are quickly adjusting to that potential new reality.
