In an interview with the Associated Press this week, “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston said that he regrets the rise of cancel culture in our society, insisting that we need to remember the qualities of forgiveness and charity and turn away from the egoic temptations to ruin a person’s life over something they said.
“We live in this ‘cancel culture’ of people erring and doing wrong — either on purpose or by accident — and there’s less forgiveness in our world,” he said.
“I think we’re unfortunately in a coarser environment. I think our societies have become harder and less understanding, less tolerant, less forgiving.,” he continued. “Where does forgiveness live in our society? Where can we accept someone’s behavior if they are contrite, if they are apologetic and take responsibility? Isn’t it possible that forgiveness plays a part of that and they are welcomed back in, as opposed to creating more fences, creating more, ‘you’re out, you’re in, that’s it.’ You make one mistake, gone.”
Cranston urged people to remember that the ability to forgive others is not the weakness it is often characterized as on social media.
“I think we need to take a second look at that, exhale, and realize that asking forgiveness and receiving forgiveness are not weaknesses, but are human strengths,” he said.
Cranston makes some good point here, but it’s important to realize – deep down and completely – that cancel culture actually has little or nothing to do with anyone actually getting offended. It certainly has nothing to do with eliminating the world of “offensive” speech. To understand these people, you have to understand the mob mentality, because that’s what they are. They are cultists who believe – against every available piece of evidence – that racism is worse in America today than it ever has been.
There’s no reasoning with members of a cult. There’s no arguing. Indeed, you’ll notice that some of the people who have seen their careers hurt the worst by this cult have been those who tried to bend over backwards and apologize for statements that needed no apology. This is how you signal to the cult that you’re one of them, and that you’ll submit to whatever form of punishment they deem fit. Those who ignore the cult or tell them to get stuffed usually come out okay.
These folks on the left are too high on their own moral righteousness to be bothered with forgiveness. They don’t even see their targets as actual human beings. It’s all a game to them: Who can we destroy next? Who can we force to their (literal) knees? What outlandish demands can we actually get them to take seriously?
Cowardice has led us to the place where these idiots have any power at all. And it’s going to take extraordinary courage to prevent it from getting worse.
