(PatriotNewsDaily.com) – Former President Donald Trump’s lawyers held a meeting on Thursday with Special Counsel Jack Smith and his team in Washington, D.C., ahead of the expected federal indictment that will be connected to Trump’s role in the Jan. 6, Capitol attack.
The meeting was held on the same day the federal grand jury was set to meet at the Washington federal courthouse, leading to even more speculations about the possibility of an indictment being near. Trump is currently the frontrunner in the 2024 Republican primary race, and last Tuesday he revealed that he had received a “target letter” from the Department of Justice in connection to this case. In the letter, he was told to appear before the federal grand jury within the next four days, leading Trump to believe that he should expect to be indicted.
Last week during a Fox News town hall with Sean Hannity, Trump stated that the reason the Department of Justice was rushing with the indictments was because they were trying to interfere with the 2024 presidential election. He added that this was a clear case of election interference in a way that has never before occurred in U.S. history.
During the town hall, Trump also alleged that the Justice Department had been turned into an “absolute weapon” by the Democrats.
Last fall, Special Counsel Jack Smith was appointed to handle the cases relating to Donald Trump. In the case of Jan. 6, 2021, Smith is examining the effect that Trump and other entities had in trying to block the peaceful transfer of power after the 2020 presidential election was completed, including the attempts to stop the Electoral College certification on Jan. 6, 2021.
On the day of the Capitol attack, Trump supporters had managed to breach the U.S. Capitol and stop a joint session of Congress which was meant to certify the Electoral College results, and thus, President Biden’s election.
