( – On Sunday, the White House pointed out some of the comments made by Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) during an interview when he had argued that the House GOP did not have any evidence that supported opening an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.

Following Romney’s remarks on NBC’s “Meet the Press” a White House spokesperson sent out an email that included a clip from the interview as well as a short transcript from his statement. During the interview, Romney stated that if he were a member of the House of Representatives he would vote against impeachment.

NBC’s Kristen Welker proceeded to ask him whether he could see evidence that supports the claims that Biden had committed many “high crimes and misdemeanors” to which Romney said that he had not seen any evidence to support these claims. He added that before an impeachment case was started there needs to either be some evidence, or at least inclination that there has been some wrongdoing. However, so far there has not been any evidence to suggest that.

This statement is a direct response to the House GOP as they have frequently argued that the reason the inquiry was being opened is so that they could gain access to evidence that could potentially show that there was wrongdoing from Biden.

In the email, the White House pointed out that the remarks by Romney were made only a couple of days before the scheduled vote in the House for opening an impeachment inquiry. They further argued that this was a “political stunt.”
