( – President Joe Biden was criticized heavily following his visit to Maui after the devastating wildfires for being unable to pronounce the names of Maui officials. Biden’s visit to the Hawaiian island was focused on surveying the recovery efforts and damage caused by the wildfires.

Following these latest gaffes in his speech, many have once again questioned the mental acuity of the president. Biden was also blasted for appearing to not take seriously how hot the ground was during his tour of Lahaina, a historic resort town that was widely burned to the ground. Even prior to his trip Biden had faced a lot of outrage over the way he handled the disaster and his silence over the devastation.

Last week, Biden did not explicitly commit that he would be visiting the island during a speech and he was also dismissive in how he responded to questions about the rising death toll on the island while staying in his Delaware beach home.

On Monday while the President and First Lady Jill Biden visited the island, Biden remarked that the entire nation was grieving with the people of Maui and pledged that federal support would continue to be available for as long as necessary. During his visit, Biden also took a helicopter tour to survey the burned area, while also meeting with local, state, and federal responders who have been assisting in the recovery efforts.

However, his August 14 announcement that the Maui households affected by the devastation would be able to receive a one-off $700 payment was widely viewed as insulting.
