( – On Monday, President Biden hosted a celebration on the White House lawn for the Juneteenth holiday, which he used as an opportunity to slam the Republican party for attempting to push back against the efforts of Black Americans.

Vice President Kamala Harris, her husband Doug Emhoff, and dozens of other lawmakers gathered on the White House’s South Lawn for a concert including performances by Patti Labelle, Gladys Knight, Doug E. Fresh, Trombone Shorty, and Kirk Franklin.

Biden commented that there had never before been a celebration like this on the lawn of the White House and that this was a “fitting tribute” to the holiday.

In 2021, Biden signed legislation establishing Juneteenth, which marks the end of slavery in the United States, as a federal holiday. Every year on June 19th, the holiday is celebrated, as that was the day the African slaves were informed of their emancipation.

However, during the celebration, Biden also took the opportunity to warn that there were “old ghosts in new garments” that were threatening the progress they had made and which would bring them back. He added that these were people looking to reduce opportunities, take away freedoms, and attack the importance of ‘diversity.’ He continued saying that they were even banning books that talked about the Black experience as they attempted to rewrite History.

Still, he pointed out that U.S. history was not about the past but rather about the present and future, and whether they choose to make that a future for all of them or some of them.
