( – Democratic Congressman Adam Schiff has placed a 2024 bid for the Senate in his state. If successful he recently revealed that his main focus would be on creating a greener America in the future.

He further argued that if he were to join the upper chamber one of the first actions he would take would be to abolish the filibuster, a tool that is often used by the Republicans to push against President Biden’s climate change agenda.

The filibuster blocks any legislation from moving forward unless it manages to get 60 votes instead of just allowing measures to pass because they have a simple majority. In order to get rid of the filibuster, 50 votes are necessary. In 2022, the Democrats had been aiming to get rid of the filibuster and pass their voting rights bill. However, their attempts were unsuccessful as there was opposition from moderate Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin who pushed for the benefits of the filibuster as it encouraged bipartisanship.

If the party manages to elect progressive Democrats in the next election, they could potentially get much closer to succeeding in passing liberal legislation, including Schiff’s police Polluter Portfolio Disclosure Act, which would mandate that large insurance companies disclose all fossil fuels investments they make. Schiff has argued that this measure is paving the way for the future.

Schiff has often talked about his opposition to Republicans and the Make America Great Again movement arguing that it was harming their ability to pass greener measures and legislate.
