2006: Back When Joe Biden Thought We Should Keep Illegal Aliens Out

Former Vice President Joe Biden is getting bashed by Democrats in the party’s left wing for so many things, it’s hard to keep track. Whether it’s for “mishandling” the Anita Hill hearings or for giving out unwanted back rubs or for supporting the Clinton’s 1990s-era crime bill, there are so many ways in which Biden is out of touch with the “progressive” vein of the new Democratic Party. Another such way surfaced this week when CNN uncovered a 2006 video where Biden actually advocated for keeping illegal immigrants out of the U.S. How awful!

“Folks, I voted for a fence,” he said back then in a South Carolina speech. “And unlike most Democrats – some of you won’t like it – I voted for 700 miles of fence. But let me tell you, we can build a fence 40 stories high but unless you change the dynamic in Mexico and — and you will not like this, and — punish American employers who knowingly violate the law when, in fact, they hire illegals. Unless you do those two things, all the rest is window dressing.”

As you can tell from Biden’s hesitation, those things were already trending towards the unpopular side on the left in 2006. Today? They sound practically like Hitler’s fascism to the open-borders crowd. Punish employers for hiring illegals? Wow. Even SAYING the word “illegals” is unacceptable to today’s left.

In a statement, a Biden spokesman insisted that the 2020 candidate still mostly felt the way he did in 2006.

“As then-Senator Biden said at the time, ‘we can build a fence 40 stories high,’ but it will not address the real issues here. Vice President Biden believes we have to stop trying to scare people and instead have an immigration discussion based on facts,” spokesman Andrew Bates said. “He believes that we can secure our borders without abandoning our values, and that we should do that by addressing the root causes of immigration abroad and working toward comprehensive immigration reform at home, including a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and smart border security.”

Yes, pathways to citizenship. That will definitely keep people from trying to come to America illegally. Great idea, Joe.

We’re not particularly interested in Biden’s current non-plan for immigration, but we are interested in how his leftist challengers respond to this old video. In a climate where California not only refuses to punish employers for hiring illegals, but will actually punish them for cooperating with ICE, this kind of old-school, dated, “enforce the law” mentality just doesn’t go over too well.
