Here’s an idea: If you’re going to go full liberal nutjob and say that by calling the media the “enemy of the people,” the president of the United States belongs in the same category as Soviet dictator Josef Stalin, at least have the courage of your convictions.
Stand up and claim it, Jeff Flake! You wanted to join the “Resistance?” Well, here you are. And if you thought you could somehow appease the liberals who want to throw the duly-elected President Trump out of office and maintain your good standing with the Republican Party, well you were sadly mistaken. If you thought you could stand up for the lying mainstream media and somehow receive plaudits and cheers from conservatives – the very conservatives the media has been trying to destroy for years – well, you are a bigger idiot than we thought.
But more than being an idiot, Jeff Flake is a coward. Worse, he’s a coward who presents himself as a hero. He thinks he’s showing everyone what a stiff spine he has, standing up to this dictatorial president. He’s the TRUE conservative of the Senate, and the Trump folks are just a bunch of banana republic imposters who need to be ejected from power. And he’s apparently going to make media appearance after media appearance, Senate speech after Senate speech, to let people know that he is one of the brave, lonely few willing to go against the GOP and the president.
Ah, but just look at how quickly he turns tail and runs. First from the prospect of a doomed re-election campaign and now from the roars of fury over his ill-advised comments comparing Trump to Stalin.
“I am in no way comparing President Trump to Joseph Stalin,” Flake told CNN, a day after doing just that. “Joseph Stalin was a killer. Our president is not. But it just puzzles me as to why you’d use a phrase that is so loaded and that has such deeper meaning, the press being the enemy of the people.”
Flake conceded that enemies of Trump – like himself – would probably be in Gitmo if the president were truly like Stalin. “So there’s no comparison there to the man, but it just puzzles me as to why any American president would use a phrase so associated with someone like Joseph Stalin. It just doesn’t comport, and it’s not good for any of us.”
In an appearance with Lou Dobbs on Fox News, former Trump aide Sebastian Gorka said Flake was out of line for making the comparison in the first place.
“Senator Flake should be ashamed of himself,” Gorka said. “My parents lived under a Stalinist regime. My father was arrested and tortured and put in prison by a Stalinist regime. This man has no moral compass left anymore. Senator Flake has just insulted all of those people who have died or suffered under a true Stalinist regime.”
We don’t know where Flake’s head is at or what he hopes to accomplish with his grandstanding speeches against this administration, but to say he’s worn out his welcome is an understatement. Whatever damage is done by Trump’s war with the media, it pales in comparison to the damage done by a sitting lawmaker calling the president a brutal dictator in the making. The sooner he takes his leave of Washington, the better off we are.
