In a fairly embarrassing set of remarks, two House chairmen said this weekend that President Trump is an “unindicted co-conspirator” and that he is guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors. These chairman – Reps. Jerry Nadler and Adam Schiff – have avoided calling for Trump’s impeachment, making their high-minded rhetoric sound that much more hollow. Then again, Schiff and Nadler are trying to drum up interest for Robert Mueller’s testimony this week, where they are sure to embarrass themselves even further.
Some people just don’t know when to quit.
“The Mueller report presents very substantial evidence that the president is guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors,” Nadler said on Fox News. “And we have to let Mueller present those facts to the American people and then see where we go from there, because the administration must be held accountable and no president can be above the law.”
On CBS, Schiff said that the only thing keeping Trump out of trouble was the DOJ’s policy against indicting a sitting president. Speaking about the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and that office’s investigation into Michael Cohen and allegations of campaign finance fraud, Schiff said that Trump is “an essentially unindicted co-conspirator.”
“I assume that all this means, in terms of the Southern District of New York, is that the case will be reopened when he leaves office, providing the statute of limitations has not run, and the Justice Department will have to weigh whether to indict the former president,” Schiff said.
Indict him for WHAT? A campaign finance violation? Gee, that cost Obama a hundred thousand dollars or so, but we don’t remember anyone – not even conservatives – calling on the former president to be imprisoned.
This is all so absurd and phony. Faced with a live impeachment resolution last week, Schiff couldn’t even bring himself to vote to keep it going. And we’re supposed to believe that Trump is really this grand criminal? It makes no sense.
We’re sure that Mueller’s testimony will be a big ratings grabber, but it’s not going to move the needle in the way the Democrats are hoping. For one thing, Mueller is there under duress, and he doesn’t seem to be happy about it. For another, he’s said explicitly that his report speaks for him. So what are Democrats going to accomplish with this circus? Nothing at all, except to remind the American people that they were lied to for two years about this Russian collusion hoax.
High crimes and misdemeanors? Look in the mirror, Democrats.
