Oprah Winfrey received the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award at the Golden Globes Sunday night, and apparently the mere fact that she stood up on stage and gave a decent speech was enough to send the left into a political frenzy. This is it! This is where we must go! Oprah must be the Democratic nominee for president in 2020! WE’RE SAVED!
Celebrities from Sarah Silverman to John Stamos lit up Twitter with variations on “Oprah 2020” posts, seemingly under the assumption that if you’re black, female, and famous and you can string a few words together without sounding like a complete dunce, you’re the perfect person to run the country. Like, seriously? We thought it was a perfectly fine speech (the subtle little jabs at Trump aside), and it was definitely the highlight of a loathsome night filled with some of the most sanctimonious nonsense we’ve ever heard, but why does this qualify her to be president of the United States?
We know at least one network was taken in by the hype. NBC tweeted that her speech sounded like an unofficial launch to her White House aspirations and called her “our next president,” a tweet that invited a metric ton of scorn from the saner users of social media. Donald Trump Jr. pounced on the tweet, saying, “In case anyone had any doubts about where the media stands this should take care of it. The bias against @realDonaldTrump is now so obvious they have simply given up hiding it. Can you trust anything they say at this point?”
NBC, realizing they goofed, came up with some lame story to make it seem like some unknown character from nowhereland made the tweet.
“Yesterday a tweet about the Golden Globes and Oprah Winfrey was sent by a third party agency for NBC Entertainment in real time during the broadcast,” the network said in a statement on Monday. “It is in reference to a joke made during the monologue and not meant to be a political statement. We have since removed the tweet.”
Putting aside the liberal frenzy, we can’t deny that Oprah’s celebrity and widespread popularity would almost certainly make her a strong presidential candidate. For that reason alone, we hope she decides that her time would be better spent hawking Weight Watchers and working on her OWN channel. If it really does turn out to be Oprah vs. Trump in 2020…well, we’re going to have a much tougher fight on our hands than we did last time around.
