Some political observers have been saying for weeks that Joe Biden’s polling dominance over the 2020 Democratic field is an illusion – a bubble that will burst once more voters begin paying attention to the race. He’s only on top now through a combination of money and name recognition. Once the campaign season gets into full swing, his throne will be seized every bit as certainly as Jeb Bush’s in 2016. With perhaps even less to recommend him for the Oval Office than Hillary Clinton, he’s merely a placeholder waiting for some brash young challenger to come along and slay the dragon.
Well, the dragonslaying may have already begun. After what was widely considered to be a very poor performance at the first debates last week, Biden has suffered a 10 point loss in the polls according to Morning Consult and FiveThirtyEight.
“The percentage of Democrats who say they would vote for former Vice President Joe Biden if the presidential race were held tomorrow slipped by 10 points after the first primary debate,” reported The Hill. “According to a Morning Consult/FiveThirtyEight poll of likely Democratic voters released on Friday, 41.5 percent said before the debates they would vote for Biden tomorrow, but 31.5 percent said the same thing after Thursday night’s debate.”
No doubt, the Biden camp will be looking directly at Kamala Harris when determining where the blame should lie for this quick downfall. The California senator stole the spotlight on Thursday night with an obviously premeditated attack on the frontrunner that relied on her race to make Biden look like an old, out-of-touch, and possibly racist fool.
“It was hurtful to hear you talk about the reputations of two United States senators who built their reputations and career on the segregation of race in this country. And it was not only that, but you also worked with them to oppose busing,” Harris said at the debate. “And, you know, there was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bused to school every day. And that little girl was me.”
This not only had the effect of making Biden look out of alignment with the modern values of the Democratic Party but also impossibly old. After all, he was in the Senate while the woman across from him was in elementary school. And you’re now going to tell us that you can fix what’s wrong with America? What have you been doing up until now?
It was a brutal night for Biden, and it could be the moment that the emperor’s new clothes were finally revealed. One thing is for sure: The race is wide open now. Any quasi-socialist could take the crown.
