In a statement on Tuesday, Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) called on Congress to investigate the World Health Organization to determine whether or not the UN public health body colluded with the Beijing government in an effort to downplay the extent of the coronavirus pandemic in China.
The Florida Republican also said that congressional hearings were needed to determine if the United States should continue funding WHO in light of their possible misdeeds and their potential cooperation in disseminating Chinese propaganda.
“They need to be held accountable for their role in promoting misinformation and helping Communist China cover up a global pandemic,” Scott said. “We know Communist China is lying about how many cases and deaths they have, what they knew and when they knew it — and the WHO never bothered to investigate further. Their inaction cost lives.”
WHO officials have been unusually eager to praise China for their response to the coronavirus, despite the fact that independent studies have shown that, had Beijing taken earlier action, they could have cut the virus’s infection rate by up to 95% globally.
But even with all of the information about how authorities in Wuhan and Beijing swept the epidemic under the rug for the first months of the spread, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised Xi Jinping’s “openness to sharing information” after getting back from China on January 28.
Compounding matters, Dr. Bruce Aylward of WHO has touted China’s “agile and aggressive” response to COVID-19. Apparently, officials at WHO are impressed with a response that started with two months’ worth of denials followed by an authoritarian crackdown the likes of which have never been seen before in global history. Sounds like the kind of organization we should definitely be funding.
Accusing the UN organization of willfully spreading misinformation about the coronavirus, Scott said a full-scale investigation is needed.
“The mission of the WHO is to get public health information to the world so every country can make the best decisions to keep their citizens safe. When it comes to coronavirus, the WHO failed,” Scott said.
To that end, it should probably not be forgotten that on January 14, WHO delivered this whopper of a tweet on behalf of Beijing: “Preliminary investigations conducted by the Chinese authorities have found no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission.”
If the UN can do no better than to take patently-obvious propaganda from authoritarian governments and then pass it on to the rest of the world, then it is high time that the UN be dismantled.
