Last week, we learned that the Republican fundraising machine – the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee – was absolutely destroying the Democrats in terms of raising money for the 2020 election. While the Democratic National Committee brought in $22.9 million over the last three months, the RNC brought in a whopped $51 million. Combine that with Trump’s campaign coffers, and you’re talking about a political war machine with more than $100 million in the bank. Put another way, the Republicans raised more money over the last quarter than the TOP FIVE 2020 Democrats combined!
Are Democrats getting nervous? You bet.
From Vice News:
The huge cash disparity puts Democrats behind the eight-ball in the time-and money-consuming process of building out strong voter contact programs in the states that will determine whether Trump gets reelected.
“They need to get their shit together. Now,” said Adam Parkhomenko, a Hillary Clinton campaign alumna who served as the DNC’s national field director for the final few months of the 2016 campaign.
“When Hillary became the nominee in 2016 she was handed nothing, the DNC was nothing and there was nothing to build on,” he said. “You’d think we would have spent the last few years making sure this would never happen again, and it has.”
Trump’s campaign and the RNC are already using their massive cash advantage to sow the ground for next year’s election, spending more than $60 million this year alone on digital operations including $10 million on ads and building out a ground game infrastructure that takes months if not years to develop.
The article goes on to outline some structural fundraising problems at the DNC that could help explain why the Democrats are so bad at raising money, but we have to believe that the trouble is more systemic than that. Yes, there are rich Democrats, to be sure, but who is this party really pandering to these days? Broke college kids, welfare leeches, and illegal aliens? That’s not exactly a rich source of campaign funding.
Furthermore, who wants to give money to a party that is now actually flirting with socialism? Democratic voters have long proven that they’re okay with being taxed out the wazoo, but to spend your hard-earned, capitalism profits on a party that’s going to destroy the very system that allowed you to succeed? That’s a hard sell.
But maybe it just comes down to this: Few Democratic donors actually believe that Joe Biden or anyone else in the 2020 field actually has a prayer’s chance of defeating Trump. Why throw good money at a lost cause?
Whatever the real problem, it’s one Democrats are going to have to figure out if they don’t want to get obliterated next year.
