At any point, do Democrats like Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) ever look in the mirror and call themselves on their own ignorance? Or are they so blissfully ignorant that they don’t even realize how dumb they sound? We suppose that has to be the case. Either that, or they are so high off the adoration of equally-ignorant young leftists that they don’t ever pause to think about it one way or the other. Whatever the case may be, Tlaib’s insistence this weekend that Democrats should now be calling for a $20/hour federal minimum wage is the stuff of comedy.
In remarks before the Restaurant Opportunities Center of Michigan, Tlaib argued that it was no longer enough for Democrats to fight for $15.
She said that right now, “tipped employees make $2.13 per hour, federally.”
“Think about that for one minute,” she said. “People cannot live on those kind of wages, and I can’t allow people to be living off tips, you know, relying on tips for wages. It’s just not enough to support our families.
“By the way,” she continued, “when we started it, it should have been $15. Now I think it should be $20 — make sure America Rising hears that. It should be $20 an hour — $18 to $20 an hour at this point. They say all of this is going to raise the cost, but I can tell you, milk has gone up, eggs have gone up, everything has gone up. The cost of a lot of things that we need has gone up already.”
Well, yes, that’s the way of inflation and other market forces. But there’s a hell of a difference between milk going up a dollar and milk going up $10. But in her remarks, Tlaib gives no indication of having any sense of scale or any real idea what this would all mean in the marketplace. If she did, she would know that if she’s going to call for a $20 an hour minimum wage, she might as well call for one that begins at $100. Either way, it’s going to change the economy so fundamentally that we’re going to be right back where we started from.
It’s the kind of pie-in-the-sky fantasy that leads children to ask, “Why can’t the government just print a bunch of money and give every American a million dollars a year?”
Tlaib’s call for a $20/hour minimum wage comes, coincidentally, right as her socialist pal Bernie Sanders found a way to give his staffers $15 an hour for their campaign work.
How? He cut their hours back until their salaries equaled this magic number.
That way lies the future, if we hand it to Democrats who don’t understand the first thing about economics.
