According to a new poll from NPR/PBS/Marist, not only have the Democrats done almost nothing to change anyone’s mind about impeachment, a full 65% of Americans say there’s basically nothing that could happen during the public hearings that would change their minds.
That leaves the Democrats playing to a relatively small 30% of the audience that says changing their minds is even possible. And unfortunately for them, it’s just as likely that those people will change their minds in favor of Trump as it is that they’ll turn against him. Indeed, another recent poll – this one from Politico/Morning Consult – shows that 10% more independents oppose impeachment now than they did last week. If you’re Nancy Pelosi, things are heading in a disastrous direction.
According to the NPR poll, Americans are split virtually down the middle on the question of whether President Trump should be impeached and removed: 45% say yes and 44% say no. This tracks about evenly with the usual partisan split, meaning Democrats have their work cut out for them if they want to convince anyone other than their own base that Trump committed impeachable offenses.
The problem Democrats have right now is that the question really isn’t about whether or not Trump asked Ukraine to help out with a politically-motivated investigation. This is what Adam Schiff, Pelosi, and the media just don’t get. Even if they trot out irrefutable evidence that Trump pressured Ukraine into investigating the Bidens, it’s not going to be enough. Many of the president’s supporters seem to acknowledge that it happened, and that it’s not a great thing. But no one thinks that it rises to the level of an impeachable offense.
And why would they? The Democrats have been screaming about impeachment since the beginning of Trump’s presidency. Furthermore, we’ve all watched as Hillary Clinton using foreign assistance (the Steele Dossier) for political advantage. We’ve all watched as Democratic senators have threatened to withhold aid from Ukraine if they don’t cooperate with the Mueller investigation. Hell, this whole Biden-is-corrupt thing started because the former Vice President withheld aid from Ukraine on the condition that they fire a prosecutor. And now we’re supposed to believe Trump should be thrown out of office for doing the same thing? Huh?
It makes no sense, and the public isn’t buying it. That won’t stop the Democrats from wasting everyone’s time, though, because with the 2020 candidates they’ve got, this impeachment inquiry is their only shot.
