According to an Obama administration email that has been reviewed by the Senate’s Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is trying desperately to clear the immigration backlog ahead of the November elections. The email, sent by a USCIS official, encourages employees to put in some overtime to get as many new citizens on the streets as possible.
“The Field Office due to the election year needs to process as many of their N-400 cases as possible between now and FY 2016,” reads the email. “If you have cases in this category or other pending, you are encouraged to take advantage of the OT if you can. This will be an opportunity to move your pending naturalization cases. If you have not volunteered for OT, please consider and let me know if you are interested.”
USCIS spokespeople are denying any funny business; they say election years always come with a surge in naturalization applications and that their department is simply interested in moving through those applications in a timely and efficient manner.
But Republican Senators Ron Johnson and Chuck Grassley think the agency is taking a much-too-cavalier approach to a matter of great national security concern. The two sent a letter to Homeland Security chief Jeh Johnson on Wednesday, alerting him to what they consider a significant problem.
“Your department seems intent on approving as many naturalization cases as quickly as possible at a time when it should instead be putting on the brakes and reviewing past adjudications,” the letter said.
The Republicans noted that just this week, the DHS Inspector General released a report that showed nearly 900 people from terrorist havens had recently been granted citizenship through a flawed system.
The two reports also struck immigration watchdogs as concerning. Interviewed by Fox News, Jessica Vaughan of the Center for Immigration Studies said that the Obama administration was putting politics ahead of national security.
“Considering that USCIS already has a troubling record of inadequate review of naturalization applications, and mistakenly giving away citizenship to terrorists, criminals and other fraudsters, it is disturbing that they are now in full and blind rubber stamp mode to crank out new citizens,” said Vaughan.
Immigrants like public benefits.
Democrats provide them.
Immigrants get naturalized and vote for Democrats.
Democrats push for more immigration.
This is the cycle that is destroying our country. In a little less than two months, we get our one (and perhaps only) shot at putting a spoke in the wheel. The cycle has been allowed to go on for too long. After this year, it will get exponentially stronger.
