We’re used to hearing Republicans express shock and dismay about the 2020 Democrats and their policy proposals on illegal immigration. Most any conservative with half a mind to preserve this nation knows that when you’re talking about decriminalizing illegal immigration, doing away with any detention or deportation, and advertising asylum to people in Central America, what you’re really talking about is an open borders policy. But Democrats, even those who have not completely drunk themselves into a stupor on the Kool-Aid, are far less willing to confront this extremist view of the border.
But while those Democrats are a rare breed, they aren’t completely nonexistent. Just look at President Obama’s former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson. He’s a long way from a Republican, but even he knows a train wreck when he sees it.
“That is tantamount to declaring publicly that we have open borders,” Johnson told the Washington Post. “That is unworkable, unwise and does not have the support of a majority of American people or the Congress, and if we had such a policy, instead of 100,000 apprehensions a month, it will be multiples of that.”
Except we wouldn’t actually have ANY apprehensions, because Democrats’ next step is to abolish ICE, abolish the Border Patrol, and simply give everyone who wants to enter our country a little American flag and a work permit. Oh, sorry, the American flag is racist, we forgot. Maybe a Pride flag, instead.
But most Democrats aren’t like Johnson. They’re more like Celinda Lake, who also spoke to the Washington Post. The Democratic pollster said, without evidence, that Americans were changing their minds about illegal immigration; she thinks the 2020 candidates are right in line with those new attitudes.
“Now people volunteer that father and daughter who died, and parents being separated. It’s a very different image now,” Lake said. “The Democrats’ shift in perspective actually is fitting exactly with the public’s shifting in perspective, and I think it’s actually a unique moment.”
Let’s see about that.
June 16th Rasmussen survey: Only 31% of Americans favor giving illegal immigrants access to taxpayer-subsidized healthcare. Every single Democrat on the debate stage said they were for this practice.
June 5th Rasmussen survey: 46% supported Trump’s plan to move ahead with tariffs against Mexico if they wouldn’t help stop the flow of illegal immigrants from Central America. 40% opposed the plan.
June 16th Gallup poll: More Americans say immigration is the greatest problem facing the country than ever before in Gallup’s polling history.
Same Gallup poll: 35% say it’s time for a decrease in our immigration levels; 27% say they want it increased.
Sorry, but this doesn’t sound in line with the rhetoric we heard on that Democratic debate stage last week. Next November will tell the whole story, of course, but we have a sneaking suspicion that Democrats are going to be in for yet another big election night surprise.
