Democrats have been using every trick in the book to railroad the confirmation hearings of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, and none of them have succeeded in doing anything other than (perhaps) raising some money through the usual mailing lists.
They’ve tried to attack Kavanaugh’s record in the White House, they’ve tried to convince America that he’s some kind of right-wing extremist, and they’ve tried to sell the country on the fictional idea that Kavanaugh believes that presidents are inherently above the law.
They’ve even tried to gather photographs of Kavanaugh attending Washington Nationals games in the vain hope that maybe they can catch him in some sort of corrupt hot dog purchase or something? We’re not sure, but to say they’re desperate is to understate the situation.
So it was little surprise to us when, after Michael Cohen plead guilty to paying off Stormy Daniels (among other, much more serious offenses), the Democrats would try to use this as their final Hail Mary.
Sen. Mazie Hirono canceled her scheduled meeting with Kavanaugh, explaining that she “chose not to extend a courtesy to this president who is an unindicted co-conspirator.”
Sen. Cory Booker, who has already used up his fair share of phony reasons why the Kavanaugh hearings should not commence, said that the Supreme Court nominee should be put on ice until the Senate can deal with “the matter of the president being credibly implicated” by Cohen’s plea agreement.
Then there was Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who found the highest horse he could climb to make these comments on Twitter:
“At this moment in our nation’s history, the Senate should not confirm a man to the bench who believes presidents are virtually beyond accountability, even in criminal cases; that they are essentially above the law and only Congress can check a president’s power.
“Judge Kavanaugh’s refusal to say a POTUS must comply w a duly issued subpoena & Mr Cohen’s implication of POTUS in a federal crime make the danger of Kavanaugh’s nomination to the SCOTUS abundantly clear. It’s a game changer & Chairman Grassley should delay confirmation hearings.”
It’s clear Democrats are reading from the same script; likely 2020 presidential hopeful Sen. Kamala Harris tweeted: “Americans don’t want a president who is an unindicted co-conspirator in a crime to have the power to appoint someone to the Supreme Court. We should not proceed with Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings.”
So, it strikes us that the Democrats’ whining might have a lot more force behind it if they hadn’t been trying SO hard to destroy this nominee from the very beginning. Perhaps if they’d signaled an initial willingness to give the man a fair hearing, the country could take seriously their constant and pointed repetition of the phrase “unindicted co-conspirator.” As it stands, the Democrats have long since burned up any appearance of good faith and this latest effort will fail as hard as all of their previous attempts to keep a good man off the Supreme Court.
