MSNBC’s Morning Joe program has turned into one of the most ludicrous, WWE-style political programs on the airwaves, and that’s really saying something when you consider what else is on these days. Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski do nothing at all to tame their guests, most of whom come onto the show with an anti-Trump agenda.
But even given that day-in, day-out scenario, we were surprised to see guest Donny Deutsch go as far as to suggest that should President Donald Trump lose the 2020 election, he would command the troops to take over the White House and, presumably, turn the country into a fascist dictatorship in one fell swoop.
We’ve seen ThinkProgress articles with more reason and logic than this pathetic scene.
“Imagine two years from now and that we will have a close election and let’s say a Democrat wins,” Deutsch mused. “We’ve watched this man, Donald Trump. Donald Trump will come out and say – he was already teeing it up in 2016, ‘No, no, this is wrong to my 50 million people. Take to the streets. These ballots are wrong. The sky is not blue. The sky is green.’ That will be our biggest constitutional crisis—”
“But Donny, let me cut you off really quickly here and ask you this question,” Scarborough said. “You know Donald Trump really well. Do you really think that as things get worse and worse for him that he is going to put himself on the ballot in 2020 knowing he is going to lose? Because for all of his failures he’s got to know he is going to lose. Things are going badly.”
Things are going badly? The Democrat Blue Wave turned out to be a minor puddle, the economy is roaring like it hasn’t since the middle of the W. presidency, Trump is gaining ground with demographic groups that have never even flirted with supporting a Republican, and the North Korean nuclear threat is well on its way to being neutralized. We’re rid of the despicable Iran deal, our industries are free of Obama’s onerous regulations, jobs are pouring back into the country. Yeah. Things are going just terribly for this president! Why would he think he could possibly win again?
“I think he will be disqualified before,” predicted Deutsch. “But in the sad event he does run and he does lose which will be a happy event, it will be stunning what we would see. He would be a president going, ‘I’m not leaving. I’m not leaving. Call the military.’ We have to look at this man. He really would do that. He would say, no, no, no. I’m still here. And even if they carried him out, he would turn to 50 million Americans and say I’m still your president and this is my new government. This is what we’re dealing with here, kids.”
It’s good that he added “kids” to that last remark, because children are the only Americans who could possibly believe in this fantasy tale.
Well, children and Democrats.
