Nothing angers the left like watching one of their own (or someone they perceived as their own) go off script and begin saying something that doesn’t align with the liberal message. So it was with anger, hostility, and tones of betrayal that leftist celebrities and black writers bashed Kanye West for daring to support President Donald Trump. After telling his millions of Twitter followers to think for themselves, West shocked the nation by expressing praise for conservative activist Candace Owens and posting a picture of himself wearing a “Make America Great Again” cap.
We don’t know if Kanye is being sincere in his praise for the president or his flirtations with conservative thought, and it’s really beside the point. Kanye has a history of trolling for reactions, and there is hardly anything he could do that would be more subversive than to suddenly slam Black America’s unbreakable alliance with the Democratic Party. As far as we know, he may be doing this as much to make waves as to express his genuine political feelings. Or hell, maybe he’s for real. When it comes to West, there’s really no way to know.
What we DO know, though, is that if this was an attempt to bait Hollywood and the black pundit class into a reaction, it worked flawlessly. The internet lit up Wednesday and Thursday with irate reactions to Kanye’s latest messages.
“He’s a f**king moron Kanye,” wrote Trump’s biggest fan, Rose O’Donnell. “Wake from the illusion.”
Singer John Legend said that he was a fan of open-minded artists before proving that, no, he wasn’t.
“I love that great, brilliant artists have the power to imagine a better future,” he wrote. “But artists can’t be blind to the truth. The defining trait of Trump’s campaign and political profile was his embrace of white supremacy. He made it clear every time he spoke. Some serious cognitive dissonance to ignore that for the other x% you might find appealing. I guess I agree with >1% of anyone’s thoughts though.”
Legend did not post any analytic evidence that Trump embraced white supremacy on the campaign trail, of course. This is just one of those “truths” you’re supposed to accept because the media tells you to.
Speaking of racism, though, The Root website published several pieces condemning Kanye’s new political stance, including one titled, “Kanye West Does Not Care About Black People.” It is another truth that there aren’t very many deep thinkers writing for The Root.
Speaking of The Root, one of their writers by the name of Touré tweeted, “It’s great to be a free thinker but that alone ain’t the point. If you’re freely thinking your way into dumb conclusions then color me not impressed.”
Yo, it’s awesome that you’re a free thinker, but it’s only praiseworthy if that thinking leads you to standard left-wing conclusions, Kanye! Duh!!
We don’t particularly know or care what Kanye’s true feelings are about all of this, but we hope that at least a few of his fans are looking at this and thinking to themselves, “Hmm, why DO all black people have to have the exact same political opinions?”
Wake from the illusion, indeed.
