Former Republican Senator Jeff Flake retired from his political career in 2019 when he realized that his unpopular anti-Trump stance was going to get him drubbed out of office by the voters in Arizona. Having been one of the last, loudest, and most obnoxious NeverTrumpers in the party’s Washington mechanism, Flake took every opportunity possible to denigrate the president and show everyone in the media how tall and pretty his high horse was. For his efforts, he landed a contributor position at CBS News and a residency at Harvard. We guess that was worth it?
Anyway, Flake’s not done yet. In an op-ed for the Washington Post on Monday, he urged Republicans on Capitol Hill to turn on Trump. Want to “save your souls,” conservatives? Here’s how you do it.
From the op-ed:
If the House decides against filing articles of impeachment, or the Senate fails to convict, Senate Republicans will have to decide whether, given what we now know about the president’s actions and behavior, to support his reelection. Obviously, the answer is no.[…]
My fellow Republicans, it is time to risk your careers in favor of your principles. Whether you believe the president deserves impeachment, you know he does not deserve reelection.
Our country will have more presidents. But principles, well, we get just one crack at those. For those who want to put America first, it is critically important at this moment in the life of our country that we all, here and now, do just that.
Trust me when I say that you can go elsewhere for a job. But you cannot go elsewhere for a soul.
Look, far be it from us to question the Great Jeff Flake and his Mighty Principles. And far be it from us to suggest that every Trump-supporting Republican on Capitol Hill has any more scruples than your average politician. But let’s get one thing straight: If we’re really going there – if we’re really going to start talking about saving our souls – then let us begin with what happens if/when Trump loses the next election.
Well, what happens, Jeff? We’ll tell you: The Democrats get to rush into the White House, implement the most progressive agenda this nation has ever seen, and bring true-blue socialism to the United States. And we’re quibbling over some off-color tweets? We’re wringing our hands about a call to Ukraine, of all places? Let’s be serious.
Despite overwhelming opposition from Democrats, Obama holdovers in the government, the media, and even Republicans like Jeff Flake, President Trump has done an enormous amount to bring this country back from the brink of Obama’s destruction. Now, his role is even more important: Standing as a bulwark – a WALL, if you will – between the worst radicals in a generation and the preservation of the United States. We’re quite comfortable with the state of our souls, Mr. Flake. Quite comfortable.
