Perhaps the greatest American monument outside of Washington, D.C. and the New York harbor, Mount Rushmore’s presidential carvings have loomed over South Dakota since 1941, inspiring millions of Americans to travel to an area they would have probably had little reason to visit otherwise. The rock carvings are beyond iconic – they are a symbol of this country’s greatness and stand as a true testament to not only the four presidents pictured but the artistic genius that brought them into creation.
Naturally, activists want the whole thing to be destroyed.
Ahead of President Trump’s planned visit to the landmark, Oglala Sioux President Julian Bear Runner is calling on Mount Rushmore to be removed because it stands on land that Native Americans claim as their own. Bear Runner said this week that many local Sioux “want the monument removed” because the four white leaders engraved on the mountain are offensive to their history.
From The Argus Leader:
Mount Rushmore was created to draw tourism to South Dakota and its carving took place between 1927 and 1941. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum intended for Mount Rushmore to stand for America’s greatness, and it’s referred to as the Shrine of Democracy. However, stories in recent years have highlighted Borglum’s ties to white supremacy, possibly joining the Ku Klux Klan, his Confederate sculpture funded by the KKK and that the tribes have argued for generations that the land was stolen from them.
“Mount Rushmore is a symbol of white supremacy, of structural racism that’s still alive and well in society today,” said Nick Tilsen, a member of the Oglala Lakota tribe and the president of a local activist organization called NDN Collective. “It’s an injustice to actively steal Indigenous people’s land then carve the white faces of the conquerors who committed genocide.”
Asked about the removal of Mt. Rushmore’s legendary carvings this week, Gov. Kristi Noem was unequivocal: “Not on my watch.”
If only the U.S. had more leaders with a bit of spine like Noem, we could look at all of this madness and chuckle about how stupid it all is. Unfortunately, because the Democratic Party is quickly being captured wholly by the radical left, what’s brewing right now in the BLM/anti-racist/intersectionalist circles is going mainstream with stunning rapidity.
