Freshman Democrat Resigns After Nude Pics Reveal Torrid Sex Scandal

Rep. Katie Hill (D-CA) announced her resignation this week after leaked pictures showed her engaging in sexual activity, drug use, and inappropriate relations with her office staffers.

“It is with a broken heart that today I announce my resignation from Congress. This is the hardest thing I have ever had to do, but I believe it is the best thing for my constituents, my community and our country,” Hill wrote.

“This is what needs to happen so that the good people who supported me will no longer be subjected to the pain inflicted by my abusive husband and the brutality of hateful political operatives who seem to happily provide a platform to a monster who is driving a smear campaign built around cyber exploitation,” Hill continued.

Politico, which was first to break the story, outlines the details:

Hill’s announcement capped a tumultuous 10-day episode that shook the Democratic Caucus. Hill was a prominent figure in the historic Democratic freshman class, and her resignation was a blow to the colleagues who defended her as the 10-day episode unfolded.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who has taken a hard line in sexual harassment cases, said in a statement that Hill had made the right decision in stepping down.

“[Hill] has acknowledged errors in judgment that made her continued service as a member untenable,” Pelosi said on Sunday night. “We must ensure a climate of integrity and dignity in the Congress, and in all workplaces.”

Hill was under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for allegations of an improper sexual relationship with a male congressional staffer, a claim she denied. Hill admitted to and apologized for an “inappropriate” relationship with a female campaign staffer earlier this week.

Hill said the photos, which showed her romping naked and smoking a bong, were an “appalling invasion of my privacy.”

“It is also illegal,” said Hill, who has characterized her husband’s activities as revenge porn. “We are currently pursuing all of our available legal options. However, I know that as long as I am in Congress, we’ll live fearful of what might come next and how much it will hurt.”

Staffers working for Hill have told the media that she will likely step down on November 1.

This is one of those tricky stories in which we feel a little bit of amusement watching the Democrats fall under their own sexual impropriety sword…and yet feel a bit conflicted about the way all of this transpired. We doubt we would agree on Katie Hill with much, politically, but we’re not sure anyone deserves to have their personal life exposed in quite this way.

On the other hand, it’s a good reminder that sexual abuse and imbalanced power structures are not the sole province of lascivious men.
