If Republicans are watching uneasily as socialism begins to take root among Millennials and Democrats in certain parts of the country, they aren’t nearly as concerned about the movement as many elected officials within the Democratic Party. Leaders like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer and moderate Democrats throughout the country are worried that, at a time when their party’s return to power requires reaching out to middle-of-the-road voters who liked what they saw in Donald Trump, socialists like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are ruining any shot they might have of bringing middle America back into the fold.
At a summit in Columbus, Ohio this week, organizers from the moderate Democrat think-tank Third Way attracted party officials from around the country to strategize about how to clamp down on the far-left frothers who are threatening to cost the party yet more national elections.
From NBC News:
Pragmatism may be a tougher sell in the Donald Trump era, but with the 2020 presidential race just around the corner, moderate Democrats know they are running out of time to reassert themselves.
The gathering here was just that — an effort to offer an attractive alternative to the rising Sanders-style populist left in the upcoming presidential race. Where progressives see a rare opportunity to capitalize on an energized Democratic base, moderates see a better chance to win over Republicans turned off by Trump.
The fact that a billionaire real estate developer, Winston Fisher, co-cohosted the event and addressed attendees twice underscored that this group is not interested in the class warfare vilifying the “millionaires and billionaires” found in Sanders’ stump speech.
“You’re not going to make me hate somebody just because they’re rich. I want to be rich!” Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, a potential presidential candidate, said Friday to laughs.
As we see it, though, the Democrats have made this bed for themselves. There’s a reason so-called “democratic socialism” has taken root in their festering party. That reason is called Barack Obama. That reason is called Black Lives Matter. That reason is called radical feminism. That reason is called identity politics in all of its forms, which the Democrats have embraced for decades at this point – and have REALLY embraced in the last five years or so. It’s the NFL protests, it’s the transgender bathroom situation, it’s all of it. These agenda items have attracted (and created) a new crop of left-wing politicians who will protest against liberal speakers if they are not unhinged enough to disavow everything that makes America what it is.
To turn their backs on all of that and go back to Bill Clinton’s “middle way” style of Democrat politics…well, that has the potential to hurt the party as much as going full-bore socialist. They’re in a bad way right now, those Democrats.
Shed a tear for them…if you can stop laughing long enough.
