This week, Democrats on Capitol Hill will make their first (futile) effort to pass gun control measures since taking control of the House in January. While the measure, meant to expand background checks and make it nearly impossible to conduct private gun transactions, will undoubtedly meet its demise in the Republican-controlled Senate, Democrats say it is only the first salvo in what they see as an ongoing war against gun violence in America. A war which conservatives characterize as a war on the Second Amendment itself.
From the Washington Examiner:
“We’ve got a ton of things identified,” said Rep. Mike Thompson, D-Calif., who heads a House task force on gun violence established by Democrats.
The panel is examining conceal-carry reciprocity laws, “red flag” laws targeting gun owners who are deemed a safety risk, and laws to protect children from accessing guns, Democrats said.
“Background checks are just one way to deter the expansive culture that we are living in,” said Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, D-Fla., a member of the gun violence task force.[…]
Mucarsel-Powell called expansion of concealed carry reciprocity to all states “the number one agenda,” of the NRA . Most Democrats oppose it and argue it would reduce safety in states with stricter gun laws.
With a pro-gun President in the White House and a conservative majority holding a comfortable margin in the Senate, there is little to fear from Democrats and their wish list of gun control measures. But this focus is instructive for anyone who thinks for a second that the gun-grabbing left has forgotten about their goal to disarm the nation. The fervor from Parkland may have died down in recent months, but the Democrats are just as energized as ever to erode the Second Amendment and turn every American city into Chicago.
You know, the city with some of the worst gun violence rates in the nation.
Time and time again, we see the justification for draconian gun control laws fall under the guillotine of truth, logic, and common sense. Every time there is a mass shooting, it is clear that no new Washington gun law would have prevented it. And even in those instances where a gun law might have changed the circumstances of the shooting (banning semi-automatic rifles, for instance) there is no reason to believe that the killer would have obeyed the law. If a criminal is willing to kill others, they are probably also willing to break the law to get their hands on a gun. Not to mention the fact that they could often have done the same amount of damage with a different, legal weapon.
But this is the Democratic Party, always looking for a way to expand the nanny state, build a backdoor gun registry, and keep the American citizen under Washington’s thumb. It is difficult, after all, to build a socialist, totalitarian state when your subjects are armed to the teeth.
