Democrats put Attorney General William Barr through the grilling of a lifetime on Tuesday, hammering him with questions that called into doubt Barr’s reputation, his integrity, and his very patriotism.
Determined to score points with their drooling voters, lawmakers on the House Appropriations subcommittee screamed about a lack of transparency in Barr’s Justice Department and demanded that he release to them to full, unredacted version of the Mueller report. Barr said in no uncertain terms that he was not going to do anything of the kind, but he did indicate that they would get the redacted copy within a week.
The tone of the questions came as no surprise, of course. Democrats have been insinuating that Barr is covering for President Trump since the day he released his four-page summary of the Mueller report. Shocked that their entire Russian collusion theory had gone up in smoke overnight, Democrats had to either explain to the American people that they had been lying to them for two years straight…or turn Barr into America’s Next Top Russian Agent. They chose the latter. Natch.
But there may soon come a day when Democrats wish they’d treated Barr with a little more kindness. Fact is, he holds their party in the palm of his hand right now, and they don’t even know it. They might have done well to pay a little more attention to Barr’s announcement, during the hearing, that he was assembling a team to investigate the origins of the FBI’s Russia/Trump probe. Barr also said he would review with great interest the criminal referrals being sent to him by former House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes.
See, Barr is moving on even if the Democrats aren’t. He is determined to bring respect, truth, and integrity back to the Department of Justice, and with Mueller’s investigation concluded, now is the perfect time to get started. And the only way to regain the trust of the American people is to show them, in strict detail, why the country was put through this three-year witch hunt in the first place. A witch hunt that exonerated not just President Trump but his entire campaign. Yes, they managed to put a few people in prison for crimes that were NOT collusion, but that’s really beside the point. The central question – whether anyone in Trump’s orbit knowingly conspired with the Russian government – has been answered.
It wasn’t the answer the Democrats wanted, but it’s an answer nonetheless.
Now we need bigger answers, such as how and why Obama’s FBI decided they needed to investigate their boss’s biggest political threat.
Democrats may not like the answers to those questions either.
