A House Democrat who last made a splash in the media for munching on a bucket of KFC chicken in the middle of a House session (his oh-so-clever way of calling the attorney general a “chicken” for not showing up to testify) is now pushing to impeach the target of that earlier stunt: Attorney General William Barr. In a resolution on Tuesday, Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) accused Barr of using his position atop the Justice Department to pursue political goals on behalf of President Trump.
“Today, I introduced #HRes1032, which would authorize an impeachment inquiry into Attorney General Barr,” Cohen tweeted. “He has politicized the DOJ, undermined the rule of law, abused his power, obstructed justice & violated the first amendment. He is not fit to be Attorney General.”
It would seem that even in the lion’s den of crazy that is the Democratic Party, Cohen is out on a limb with his call to impeach Barr. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told the Washington Post only days ago that it would not be wise to pursue such a goal.
“At this point,” she said, “let’s solve our problems by going to the polls and voting on election day.”
Rep. Jerrold Nadler, still smarting from the smackdown the impeachment of Donald Trump got over in the Senate, said last week that impeaching Barr would be a “waste of time.”
But Cohen apparently missed the lesson of Trump’s impeachment, which sent the president to unprecedented heights in the polling. As part of his effort to oust Barr, he cited the attorney general’s recommendation that Roger Stone get a lighter sentence, and he referred to Barr’s role in removing protesters from the area in front of the White House to make way for Trump’s trip to St. John’s Episcopal Church.
And you thought the evidence for impeaching Trump was weak!
Asked about the move to impeach Barr, DOJ spokeswoman Kerri Kupec could barely resist rolling her eyes.
“If people have a problem with Bill Barr coming back to the Department of Justice to restore one system of justice, not a two-tiered system, I think that says a lot more about the critics than it does about the attorney general,” Kupec said on Fox News. “Because that is what he has done again and again.
“He approaches all cases with an open mind. He judges them according to the facts and the law without regard to political consideration,” Kupec continued. “This is what he promised to at his confirmation, this is what he has done throughout his tenure as attorney general, and that is what he will continue to do until his last day as AG.”
Well, Democrats want an attorney general who is going to throw the Constitution out the window and allow them to use the DOJ as an enforcement wing of their party platform. And if this country should be so foolish as to vote Biden this November, that’s exactly what we’re going to see.
