Do California lawmakers do ANYTHING anymore to actually advocate for American citizens living in their state, or is the Democrat agenda essentially now just for illegal immigrants? We only ask because just in the last year, we’ve seen: California become a “sanctuary state” for illegals, threaten to fine employers who cooperate with ICE, defend the Oakland mayor who gave a heads-up to illegals in her city that ICE was planning a raid, and sue the Trump administration to stop progress on the border wall. We can’t remember the last time California Democrats did anything for legal residents, but we’re sure that’s an oversight on our part…
Anyway, fresh off of passing legislation that gives illegal immigrants drivers licenses, Sacramento is now trying to extend full health coverage to the mass of undocumented who call the state home.
The proposal — which would build on Gov. Jerry Brown’s 2015 decision to extend health coverage to all children, regardless of immigration status — is one of the most daring examples yet of blue-state Democrats thumbing their nose at President Donald Trump as they pursue diametrically opposed policies, whether on immigration, climate change, legalized marijuana or health care.
“California has never waited for the federal government, or for a political climate, to be able to take leadership on a whole host of issues,” state Sen. Ricardo Lara, author of the state Senate bill to extend Medicaid coverage to all adults, told POLITICO.
But at a time when Trump is already attempting to re-energize state Republican voters — he met with California conservatives at the White House last week to strategize against the state’s sanctuary policies — the initiative might be risky. For starters, it will be costly: The annual price tag to expand Medicaid benefits to poor adult immigrants without legal status is projected at $3 billion annually. Some also worry that extending health coverage could make California a magnet for undocumented immigrants from other states.
Well, we’d have to imagine that the rest of California’s policies already make it a magnet for illegals around the country, so we’re not sure that’s any great detractor. As far as we can tell, the Democrats in Sacramento WANT their state to attract illegals from everywhere to come make a life for themselves in the Golden State. How this serves the state’s economy, marketplace, employment sector, security, or budget is anyone’s guess, but we suppose Democrats have decided it serves them well at the ballot box. That would seem impossible given the fact that illegal immigrants can’t legally vote, and, you know, NO VOTER FRAUD HAS EVER OCCURRED ANYWHERE, but hey, we’re just going by what we’re seeing.
But the Politico article is right about one thing: Sensible California residents – even some who call themselves Democrats – are only going to stand by and watch this slow-motion suicide for so long. We’re about to see one of two things: A massive exodus out of the state or a political backlash that will destroy the left’s stranglehold on Sacramento for a generation.
We would leave room for a third option where the fools running the show out there wake up and realize they’re on the wrong side of this issue, but that just doesn’t seem to be in the cards.
